Ma`rifat

One of the most frequently occurring terms in religious and Qur'anic discourse is the term ḥaqq (truth/right). This term has various usages in the Qur'an, including its opposition to bāṭil (falsehood), the definitive fulfillment of God's promise, correspondence with reality, and the wisdom inherent in God's actions. Based on rational and transmitted proofs, the principle of ḥaqq must be established by God the Exalted. If anyone, under any circumstances, deems a right legitimate, or establishes it, and acts upon it, such a right—however unconsciously—is reliant upon the Divine Will and upon the right that God holds over His servants. The directives of Imam al-Sajjad (peace be upon him) at the beginning of the Risālat al-Ḥuqūq (Treatise on Rights) clearly indicate this matter. Since the acceptance of this proposition may appear difficult, further elaboration in this regard is necessary, especially given that such issues—particularly in a detailed and independent manner—are rarely discussed. To fulfill this obligation, it is necessary to examine these issues and respond to the relevant doubts. This article provides a detailed examination of this subject and the doubts raised concerning it.
