Abstract:
Background and Objective: Moral education, especially the promotion of chaste living, is one of the most important cultural and educational necessities in Islamic society. Considering the Holy Quran's emphasis on the role of prayer in deterring from ugliness, the present study aimed to investigate and explain the function of prayer in promoting chaste living.
Method: The research method was descriptive-analytical.
Findings: Based on the findings, 14 functions of prayer in promoting chaste living were obtained in four axes: 1) fundamental personality effects (providing basic mental health, forming an appropriate moral identity, strengthening self-esteem and self-protection, and correcting environmental effects), 2) cognitive effects and reducing the tendency to deviate (finding meaning of life and reducing the desire for sin, providing knowledge, helping to control imagination, warding off the temptation of demons, obedience to religious orders), 3) will-strengthening effects (practicing appropriate concealment, practicing non-interference and observing privacy, strengthening gaze control, strengthening control of desires and impulses), and 4) corrective and compensatory effects (strengthening moral sensitivity and encouraging repentance).
Results: According to the findings, introducing the effects of prayer, a more serious determination to revive mosques, improving the quality of their programs, and making them more attractive and usable for the new generation can be suggested.
